Age Appropriate Kids Rooms
Many parents find the task of decorating kids rooms a difficult one. There is so much more to consider than the stereotypical "pink for girls and blue for boys".
That sort of mentality won't get you very far for a theme that
can grow with your children. Instead, you may find that it limits you from giving your sons or daughters something memorable (and practical, something people tend to forget).
Kids rooms should not just be about choosing the "cutest" look; decorating should take into consideration that different ages
require different needs. There is more than just making a room look good.
Yes, we know: looking good is important. After all, kids rooms offer such a wide selection of themes and extras. You can seemingly do anything. This is not the problem.
The problem is when you forget that, despite how young your five year old daughter is now, she will soon be seven, ten, twelve, etc.
You cannot expect her to stick with the same flowered wallpaper or Barbie-doll bedspread. You need to understand that you will, in a relatively short time, have to change things for your kids rooms.
Children mature; they develop other interests. It is up to you to choose furniture and decoration that reflect those interests--or, better yet, pick basic decor that remains neutral, even as the accessories change.
To explain: while your son may love Nascar and racing now, he may not in a few years. That means that the race car bed you bought will have to be exchanged for something else. As will all the light fixtures, chairs with his favorite driver's logo on them, wall treatments, etc.
This can become expensive, especially if you have a child who's interests change quickly.
It is best for decorating childrens rooms to choose decor that is basic, simple: a standard bed, for example, as opposed to one with a theme. You can more easily change a comforter than a bed itself.
What many parents fail to remember when first starting with kids rooms is that children grow up very fast and, unless you are looking for a way to toss away money, you need to plan for that growing up.
That is not to say that your kids rooms cannot have the fun touches and accessories that they want. If your daughter wants a princess theme, then who are you to say no?
Or if your son wants Spiderman, then why not? This does not mean, however, that you should put all of your efforts into
crafting a room so unique that it will eventually have to be completely changed when their interests shifts.
This is just not sensible. Instead, create kids rooms with basic furniture (you can use adult pieces that they will grow into and simply paint them or cover them).
Accessorize rather than making everything part of a theme. Little touches--such as sheets, curtains, posters, etc.--will give your children what they want and can easily be changed when the time comes.
Kids rooms should be age appropriate, and this is much easier to accomplish if you start with the basics on your first try.
