This free craft idea recycles baby food jars as little trinket holders where your child can organize earrings, change, buttons, or any other small items.

You can use this kids free craft idea in other rooms of the house as well.

Use them to hold spices in the kitchen, small nails in the garage, or those safety pins in your sewing room. Your child can also turn this kids free craft idea into presents friends and family will love.

This project is suitable for children ages 12 and up to do on their own. Depending on the age of your child, you may want to supervise the drilling of the holes in the jar lids.

To make your kids free craft idea you’ll need:

  • 4 baby food jars
  • 2 6-inch lengths of 2-inch by 4-inch wood
  • 1 12-inch length of 2-inch by 3-inch wood paint
  • 4 small screws
  • 4 longer screws or nails to assemble the stand

Instructions for this kids free craft idea:

  1. Wash the baby food jars thoroughly and remove the labels. If you have a hard time getting the labels off, soak the jars in cold water. This will harden the adhesive and make the labels easier to remove.

  2. Now decorate the jars. There are various types of decorations you can use that will still let you see what is in the jar for this kids free craft idea.

Use paint pens to draw small pictures or write labels on the jars. Or use stained glass paint that is colorful but still semi-transparent. This type of paint can be purchased at most craft stores.

  3. To build the stand for your jars, position the two 6-inch pieces of wood standing on their ends. Nail or screw the 12-inch piece of wood on top of the other two pieces. See the diagram for a picture of how this stand is put together.

  4. Now paint and decorate the stands any way you want. You can match the colors on this kids free craft idea to your child’s room, or even stain it if you wish. Let the stand dry completely before going on to the next step.

  5. Once it is dry, turn the stand upside down. Use a small screw bit to put a hole in the center of each of the lids.

Use very short screws to attach the jar lids to the center piece of wood. The lids attach so that the top of the jar is laying on the wood. Space the lids far enough apart that you can get the jars screwed in easily.

  6. Once the lids are attached, turn the stand right side up. Screw each of the jars into a lid. Now you have turned this kids free craft idea into a fun and decorative storage piece.
Note: If you use these jars in your kitchen, you can also hang them under your upper cabinets. This puts the jars just below eye level and makes the contents easier to see.

I hope you find this kids free craft idea to be helpful.
