Ideas for Making a Kid Bedroom a Comfortable Retreat

A Kid bedroom is the most important room in your child's life. There are so many things to consider including the available technologies, styles, fashion, prices, safety, etc.

The first step in the kid bedroom design quest should be to create a list of ideas and themes, go over them with your child, and choose the winner. Then create another list of things you need to do in order to bring your idea to life. Then get ready to see your child smile with pride when her new room springs into life.

Selecting the furniture for a kid bedroom

Selecting great bedroom furniture for you kid bedroom is a major task and a very important one too. You will need to make sure that the bedroom furniture is stylish, safe, colorful, and appropriate for your child's age.

Most importantly, make sure that your child likes it since she is the one that will have to live with it. Make sure that the furniture can multi-task and that it is appropriate for relaxing, sleeping, studying, or just playing.

Making it fun for your child

The kid bedroom should be fun. If your child is unhappy with the room then it will not be accepted as their "personal space". Your child may not want to do their homework in their room if it isn't a conducive working environment.

I can't stress enough the importance of keeping your child involved in the selection of furniture, layout, colors, window treatments, rugs, and other details.

Wall colors for a kid bedroom

Colors affect our moods and productivity. In addition children especially identify with colors and use them as part of their "this is who I am" statement. Try to give your child as much of a free hand in choosing colors as possible.

Of course, there are limits to their color choice freedom, but try to be as accommodating as possible even if you hate the kid bedroom color choices.

And remember, you can always spead color around a room through artwork or posters. So, check out these links to see if they can help as well as pull the overall theme together:

Relaxing atmosphere for a kid bedroom

The kid bedroom should have a warm and relaxing atmosphere. This is the place where your child works, sleeps, entertains friends, and retreats to when she needs personal time. The definition of "relaxing" is different for a child than it is for an adult.

Even so, try to provide these basic touches: The kid bedroom should have adequate reading light and an overhead light that can be dimmed. If possible, provide a comfortable chair, beyond a desk chair, for reading and watching television.

Lots of cubby holes, shelves, and closet space is ideal, but there is plenty of portable storage-type furniture pieces available if the room does not have a lot of built-in storage.

Your Child's Kingdom

While we, as parents have a sense of pride in "our house", and see the entire home in a holistic manner, your child's pride centers on their room first, and then the rest of the house. You know you've done a good job on the kid bedroom when you hear your child's friends say "Wow, great bedroom!"
