Buying a Kid Bed - What to Look For

There are things to consider when buying a kid bed:

When your child matures out of her crib, it is time to consider a kid bed. It can be a tough transition for parents and children.

When it comes to their bed, both child and parent can encounter behavioral and emotional issues. Mom and Dad want to make the transition as smooth as possible.

One of the first things to consider when looking at purchasing a child bed is your child’s current size and weight and how fast are they going to grow. Should I buy a toddler bed or a larger kid bed? The size of your child’s room may be the deciding factor, especially if they share that room with a sibling.

Toddler beds are around 2.5’ X 4.5’ which is 11.25 sq. ft. A regular sized single kid bed is more like 4’ X 6’, that’s 24 sq. ft. That’s a difference of 12.75 sq. ft.in a small or shared room that might make all the difference.

What about a kid bed mattress? Well, that depends upon your budget. Similar to buying an adult mattress, kid bed mattresses come in all price ranges and quality ranges.

There are foam mattresses and spring-padded ones. It is recommended that you browse some of the superb consumer buying sites on the web to educate yourself on the topic of proper mattresses.

Well now we should think about style. When it comes to shopping for a kid bed you’ll soon realize the style options are numerous. Your child’s room may or may not already have an established décor.

If décor is less important to you then a standard white bed frame may be suitable, but white is just one of a multitude of choices.

Beds can be metal, wood or wood-fiber material. They can be simple, country, contemporary or thematic (i.e. racecars, Barbie, etc). Again, budget will come into play here, but so will personal preference.

Daddy will want to keep it simple, but his little angel may have her heart set on the princess merry-go-round kid bed she saw in the store window.

Some assembly required: keep in mind, depending on where you buy the kid bed, you may be required to assemble it yourself. Ask the store when you are there if they will deliver and assemble the bed. Different stores have different levels of customer service.

If you buy the bed from a store like Ikea then the products are cheaper. That’s because they don’t deliver and they don’t assemble. On the other hand, Mr. Smith’s Hometown Furniture Store may very well take care of everything for you at no extra charge and the friendly delivery man may stay for coffee and cake when he drops off the bed.

Mom, I want a bunk bed: The kid bed goes beyond your standard bed, yes mom you have entered the arena of the bunk bed. Let’s face it, bunk beds are cool. When a child goes over to his friend’s house and discovers his buddy has a bunk bed it qualifies as a fun and cool.

Great for siblings who share rooms, sleep-overs, storage and room layout, a bunk kid bed may be the choice for your child.

So, give the issue some thought, check out some websites and discuss it with your spouse and kids. Buying a kid bed does not have to be a scary issue, in fact, it can be fun.
