What A Girl Wants - Girls Rooms And Decoration
Age is the greatest factor when considering how to decorate girls rooms. Do not be fooled into thinking it is simply a matter of taking her interests and slapping together a theme.
Depending on her age, this may not work. While, yes, a teenager would stick with something for longer periods of time, younger girls will not. Ballerinas at twelve? Barbie at thirteen? That
just won't cut it.
There are themes for girls rooms, however, that can offer longevity.
By not painting yourself into a proverbial and literal corner (forgive the decorating pun), you can maintain decor for longer periods of time and make gradual changes, rather than having to throw together a new look every few
years.
Girls rooms can make the shift from young to young adult if you simply plan ahead.
Themes with broader appeal are the way to go. Rather than giving your girls rooms that oh-so-cheerful but oh-so-young Barbie look (how long do you really think that will last?), you should try for a less limited scope.
Consider something like a Parisian theme. Pastel colors and French inspired decorations can serve as a little girl's playtime dream. And, as she matures, so can the decor.
You can add pictures and accessories that reflect more adult tastes and trade in the more "cute" bed coverings for something more basic (Bohemian bed shams, anyone, to reflect a more
independent spirit?
Go from a frilly slice of Paris as a child to a more streamlined teenage look. It is actually quite simple with the amount of decorations to find.
Another way to go would be an actual adult theme. Ideas for decorating girls rooms can reflect a more mature look even when they are first starting out.
After all, what little girl doesn't like to pretend that she's all grown up? You can use adult furnishings (beds, tables, chairs, etc.) rather than buying everything in miniature and, instead of throwing images of her favorite cartoon characters everywhere, you can decorate with a more grown up approach.
Consider things she loves.
For example, if she is into dressing up, you could easily incorporate her favorite hates, gloves, etc. into the room. And
this can easily be changed later.
Girls rooms should reflect the interests of your children, but they should also reflect the simple fact of growing older. Why should you have to pour energy and money into a theme that will be changed in a few years?
It just doesn't make sense. Your girls rooms can be both young and sophisticated, if you find a theme that will actually change as they do.
Something as simple as refusing to buy that bed shaped as her current favorite character and instead purchasing a regular mattress and adding a comforter with that same character will save you so much time. You can indulge her interests without having to change every time they do.
Remember: look for broad themes for girls rooms and decorate with basic (interchangeable) furniture.
Try to pick wall colors that will not be offensive as she ages--not every girl will want hot pink as she turns teenager, after all. Go with neutrals that can be accessorized, instead of having to find something new each time.
This will just make things simpler for your girls rooms. After all, she's going to grow up. You just need to find a theme that will grow with her.
