Free Crafts for Kids - Decorative Plant
Free crafts for kids make great decorating projects for your child's room. This free craft project creates a flowerpot that brings a little bit of the outdoors inside.
Using craft or Popsicle sticks, you'll create a small wooden fence around a pot to turn it into a little garden in your child's room.
This free craft project can be used on larger window box flowerpots as well for an even bigger indoor garden.
This free crafts for kids project is suitable for ages 12 and up to do on their own. To adjust this project for younger children, cut the pieces of wood for them and help them with the fence.
To do this free crafts for kids project, you'll need:
- Scissors or craft snips
- Clay or plastic flowerpot with saucer
- Craft or Popsicle sticks
- Small pieces of wood about ¼ to ½ inch wide (balsa wood works well for this free crafts
for kids project because it is easy to cut)
- Paint
- Stickers or other decorations
- Paint the flowerpot and its saucer. Green works well for a garden look, but you and your child can pick any colors to go on the pieces. Let the paint dry completely before handling.
- Cut about 2 inches from both ends off the craft sticks. For thinner craft sticks, scissors will work fine. For thicker craft sticks or Popsicle sticks you may need to use craft snips to get a clean cut.
To make the fence, you'll put the pieces at about 1 ½ inches apart on the base. Measure the saucer for your pot to determine how many craft sticks you'll need to use. For a 4-inch pot you'll use about 10 pieces (the ends of 5 sticks).
- Cut your small balsa wood strips into 2 inch pieces. These will go between the craft sticks to make the cross braces of the fence, so you'll need the same number of braces as the number of craft stick pieces you use.
- Paint the craft stick pieces and the small pieces of wood. If you would rather, you can always leave the wood bare for a natural fence look. This may also be easier for smaller children since these small pieces can be more difficult to paint.
- Now glue the craft stick pieces to the saucer, curved side up. Set the pot into the saucer while you glue the first few pieces to make sure they fit outside the pot. If the pot hits the sticks, you'll have to trim the bottom of each of the craft stick pieces to make them a little shorter.
Once you are sure the crafts sticks are the right size, glue them all to the saucer. Let these dry. Then glue the small wood strips to the backs of the craft stick pieces to make a fence around the saucer.
- Decorate the pot with stickers, paint, or any other decorations you wish for this free crafts for kids project.
- Plant a small, easy to care for plant in the pot.
- Put the pot back into the saucer and you're free crafts for kids decorative plant is
ready to go!
