Decorating Childrens Rooms - Making It Easier

When you start decorating childrens rooms, you may find yourself in an unusual predicament: where to actually begin.

You have to not only create a room that your child will love, but also make one that will function for years to come. After all, you do not want to be stuck in that terrible trend of replacing furniture every year because your son or daughter changes interests.

Some parents may find this challenging; others, not so much. If you are in the former category, however, you offer some useful tips for decorating childrens rooms.

One: remember that function is more important than looks. Yes, we will be the first to admit that decorating kids rooms allows you the freedom to go wild and make fantasies come to life for your kids.

That being said, some parents tend to forget that rooms should function as more than just an excuse to look good. You must remember to incorporate the basics (furniture that will grow with your children, and is sturdy enough to handle wear and tear, plenty of storage and shelving space for their toys, etc.).

You should never just fill a room with items that look good. Make the purpose your priority. This will help you create a room that can be used for years, rather than having to continually update as you go.

Two: plan ahead. This goes back to the first tip. Function is important and so is remembering that you are not just decorating childrens rooms for a short time span.

These are their rooms and they will not remain as you first create them. Especially if you limit yourself with bad planning. Purchase pieces that can be used in the future; do not shy away from adult furnishings--larger beds, vanity, dresser, etc.

Your children will not always want toys, but they will need a room to call their own later. This just makes that easier.

Three: select the right theme. When decorating childrens rooms, never underestimate the power of a good theme. Not only does this make shopping easier, but it offers a sense of direction to a room.

Of course, most people don't associate direction with decorating childrens rooms but they should. A theme can make a bedroom special and unique, something your children will appreciate.

Also, by selecting a broader theme, you can have the chance to let it grow with your child. This can keep you from having to keep changing everything.

Four: remember the fun. Despite all evidence to the contrary, we do know that decorating kids rooms should be exciting, for you and your child.

The options are limitless. While you do need to approach this practically, you also must remember that your child will do more than just sleep in this room. He or she will play, pretend, learn and more.

By choosing functional pieces, that can only make all of that easier. But, by choosing lots of color, pattern, etc., you can make it more exciting. Play with ideas and see what comes of it.

Decorating childrens rooms should not be a hassle; it should be exciting. Just remember the basics and remember the fun. You can't go wrong.
