Crafts for Kids - Popsicle Stick Picture Frame

(This is one of the easier crafts for kids and is suitable for any age.)

Picture frames are a great way to take crafts and turn them into fun decorations for your child's room.

To make this craft, you'll need:

  • 8 Popsicle or craft sticks (craft sticks can be purchased at almost all stores that sell crafts for kids)
  • Craft glue
  • Paint
  • Beads, stickers, or other small decorating materials
  • Picture you can cut to size

Note: You can change this craft for kids idea for older children by using materials other than craft sticks. Balsa wood, hobby wood, or even plastic pieces can be used to form your frame. For a picture of school friends, try using small rulers to make the frame.

  1. Begin by making the square frame. Lay two craft sticks vertically across the edges of your picture. Then lay two more sticks horizontally at about the same distance to form a square.

Adjust the sticks on the picture to see what distances work best for the four sticks and to determine where the picture needs to be cropped. It's best to wait and trim the picture after the frame is complete just in case the sticks move a little while your gluing them.

  2. Once you've figured out the spacing of the sticks, use the craft glue to attach the horizontal sticks on top of the vertical ones. Let the glue dry completely while the frame lays flat.

  3. While the glue on the frame dries, make the two stands that support the frame in an upright position. For each stand, glue two craft sticks together to form an upside down V. These stands should be mirror images of one another.

For the stand that goes on the left of the frame (your left as you face the front of the frame) glue the stick that makes the left side of the upside down V on top. For the right stand, glue the right stick on top. Let the glue dry before attaching the stands to the frame.

  4. Once all of the pieces are dry, it's time to glue the frame onto the stands. Glue each stand to the outside of the vertical pieces, which will now be on the backside of the frame. Depending on the tackiness of the glue you use, you may have to hold each of these stands on while the glue dries.

  5. Now you can paint the frame for this crafts for kids project. Spray paint works well, though for younger children this may not be a good idea. Once the sticks are painted, let them set for a few hours to make sure all of the paint is dry.

  6. Trim your picture to fit the frame you have made. Use a small amount of glue to adhere the picture to the back of the frame.

  7. The most fun portion of this crafts for kids project is the decorating of the frame. You can use beads, stickers, or other items to spice up the look of your frame. Beads with letters are great for putting names or messages with the picture.

Or if it's a picture of a pet, you can glue an old dog tag onto the frame. There is no limit to the interesting items you can put on this picture frame craft for kids.
