Childrens Crafts - Clock

(This childrens crafts idea is suitable for ages 12 and up to do on their own.)

One classic decoration for your child's room is a clock they can create using this childrens crafts idea.

Your child can turn almost any ordinary clock into a personalized decoration with photos, printouts, stickers, or anything else they can think of to use. You can even change the clock face as your child's interests change.

To do this child craft, start with an inexpensive clock around 6" or 7" in diameter. You can purchase one of these for under five dollars at many stores.

This particular size will allow you to use a standard 8 ˝" x 11" sheet of card stock paper for your clock face.

Steps for this childrens crafts project:

  1. First, take the battery out of the clock before disassembling it. Otherwise, the hands may move while you are trying to remove them. This makes them more likely to bend.

  2. If the clock has a plastic cover over the face, remove this cover. You may have to take a small screwdriver to pry the cover off.

  3. Carefully take the hands off the clock. Most of these inexpensive clocks have hands that pull off fairly easily. The main thing to watch for is that you don't bend the clock hands while removing them.

  4. Next, take the cardboard face off the clock. It may be taped or glued on, but try not to rip it while removing it. You'll want to use it as a guide later to get the tabs and the center hole lined up correctly.

  5. Use the clock face template provided to create your clock face for this childrens crafts project. This template will help you line the numbers up in the correct locations on the face.

You can create your clock face on your computer using any graphics program. Or you can draw a face and use stickers or other decorations to complete it. Print or draw your clock on card stock or other stiff paper.

  6. When you finish creating the clock face for this childrens clock project, cut it out using the old clock face as a guide. An important part of this childrens crafts project is to get the center hole and the tabs in the right place so the clock face will be rotated properly in the clock.

Using the tabs helps keep the face from moving around after the clock is complete.

  7. If you like, you can use a gloss spray on this childrens crafts idea to keep your clock face bright and fresh and to give it a little shine. When the face is completely dry, use double sided tape to attach the new face to the clock.

You can use glue for this childrens crafts project, but it may make it more difficult to replace the face in the future. Hot glue may be your best choice if you do wish to use glue, as it is easier to get the glue residue off later.

  8. Carefully put the clock hands back on the clock. Again, be careful not to bend the hands. Replace the plastic cover, and your new childrens crafts clock is ready to hang in your child's room.
