Childrens Bedrooms - Make Safety a Priority!
The most important factor when designing childrens bedrooms is safety.
Not only are babies and children at risk from ordinary household objects, such as window blind cords and electrical cords, but there are less obvious hazards that
you need to be aware of.
Fabrics and all furnishing must meet government safety standards in all childrens bedrooms. For example, a safe,
secure crib is crucial.
Do not take the store owner's word for a crib's safety - know what to check over yourself. Crib bars should be close together. This will prevent the possibility of your baby's head slipping between them and getting stuck.
Be sure that the crib, and any other furniture your child will be using, is of the highest quality to withstand a
child's playful pounding when you are decorating childrens bedrooms.
A crib, especially, must be sturdy. Make sure there is no missing hardware, and that all the hardware is sturdy and
securely fastened.
The mattress must fit snugly, and the corner posts must be sturdy. Also, check the paint and varnish, or any other
finish that is used on children's bedroom furniture, especially if the furniture you are using is not new. Be
absolutely certain that the finish is non-toxic.
Additionally, once you have your crib, make sure that the crib's side rails are up when your child is in the crib.
In childrens bedrooms, all window cords and pulls should be a single pull. Never use a window cord that has a loop.
Never place the crib near windows, radiators, shelving, or near any table or piece of furniture that a toddler can
stand, climb, or pull on. Additionally, make sure all mobiles in childrens bedrooms are well out of reach.
In general, be careful of placing any children's bedroom furniture, playpens, or highchairs near windows with blinds or curtain cords in childrens bedrooms.
Install safety latches on all windows or child-safe window bars that can be opened quickly and easily in the event of a fire. Never rely on window screens to prevent your child from falling out a window.
When you are choosing toy boxes, chests, and storage trunks, make sure they do not have locks or clasps.
Additionally, the tops should always be light enough so that if a child does manage to get inside, he or she can
push it open from inside.
In childrens rooms, avoid furniture with sharp edges or points of any kind. It's best to bolt bookshelves down to
the floor, and any other furniture that can be toppled over. Likewise, secure picture frames to the walls with
screws so your child cannot pull them down.
Tape all electrical cords to the floor, but never run them under rugs. Better yet, run them behind furniture, and
install childproof safety plugs on all electrical outlets. Don't plug too many cords into one socket.
Never let night-lights and lamps touch fabrics, such as drapes or bedspreads. If you can, avoid using electrical or portable heaters. If a portable heater is necessary, keep it away from bedspreads, drapes, and anything possibly flammable.
In childrens bedrooms, put all small items that a child could choke on in a childproof container. Be aware that
buttons, balloons, marbles, and foods such as grapes, peanuts, and hard candy are all choking hazards for a small child.
Put all toys away in childrens bedrooms at night so they do not trip over them if they get out of bed. Always
install a nightlight so your toddler can see where he or she is going in the middle of the night.
Childrens bedrooms should be stimulating, comfortable, and above all, safe.
Children are naturally curious and they love to explore. Just make sure that any explorations in your child's
bedroom are as safe as possible.
