Child Craft - Door Knob Sign
(This child craft project is suitable for any age.)
This decorative craft is a fun way for your child to individualize the doorway to his or her room. This craft is a sign that hangs on a doorknob, and it can be decorated with a child's name, favorite sport, animal, or any other idea you and your child can imagine.
Fashioned after the classic "welcome" signs on household front doors, this child craft can also be a fun way to let
parents and siblings know when a child is hard at work studying or when they are playing or listening to music in
their room.
You can even put bible verses or lines from poems on the sign. There is really no limit to the ideas you can dream
up to put on this child craft.
What you'll need for this child craft project:
- Wooden or foam door knob sign (These can be purchased at most any store that sells child craft supplies. The
foam signs can be bought by the dozen at a very reasonable price, making this a wonderful child craft for parties
and other gatherings.)
- Stickers, stencils, and other small items for decorating
- For wooden signs you'll need sandpaper and paint
- If you are using wood, begin by lightly sanding the sign to make sure there aren't any splinters that will
come loose while handling. Use fine grit sandpaper for the smoothest finish. After sanding, wipe the wood with a
dry cloth to remove any remaining sawdust.
- The next step if you are using wood is to paint the sign with any non-oil based paint. You can paint both
sides the same color, or you can use various colors for each side.
If you are using foam, these door knob signs come already colored. If you want different colored sides with foam,
you can glue two pieces together using craft glue.
- Now put your message on each side of the sign. Stickers or stencils work great for putting letters on this child craft. You can get these letters in various sizes to fit whatever length of message you want.
Put your child's name, favorite sport, or other message on either side or both sides of the sign. For the sign we
made, we put "studying" on one side and "hanging out" on the other. Some other ideas are "reading", "gone to bed",
"on the phone", or "doing homework".
- Next its time to decorate your sign. Use stickers, beads, glitter, or any other decorations you can think of to go on the sign.
At stores that sell child craft supplies you can purchase small foam pieces ranging from soccer balls to zoo animals to put on your sign.
You can also buy all kinds of wooden decorations to use. You can even print or cut out pictures such as animals or
sports figures and glue them onto your sign. The possibilities truly are limitless.
When you are finished you will have a fun, personalized decoration for your child's room.
I hope this child craft idea has been helpful.
