How to Expand Your Baby Nursery Space
Tape measure in hand, you walk off the dimensions for your baby nursery. You just don’t remember the room being this small.
How are you going to be able to comfortably, much less decoratively, fit all the things for your baby into this
room?
After double-checking the size of the nursery you’ll be decorating, you’ve got to come up with a different game plan. Let’s consider your options.
Give up your bedroom for the baby nursery? No, not an option. Enlarge the size of the room you’ve already chosen?
No, not an option either.
It looks as if you’re going to have to be more creative than you had expected. Begin by making a list of the baby nursery items that are absolute musts. Let’s see...
- Crib - Must
- Changing Table - Optional
- Dad’s Overstuffed Rocking Chair - Got To Go
- Grandma’s Antique Chest of Drawers - Got To Go
- Floor Lamp w/Animal Lampshade - Got To Go
- 4-Ft. Wooden Rocking Horse - Not Now
Streamlining your baby nursery furnishings may not be what you had in mind, but you’ve got to be practical.
After all, will your baby genuinely need that wooden rocking horse right now? No, not anymore than you really need that overstuffed rocking chair taking up all that needed space.
Of course, you want your baby nursery to be warm and fuzzy. As the real center of baby operations though, it has to be functional as well. You have to be able to move around within the room.
Your primary piece of furniture in your baby nursery is naturally going to be the crib. While traditional
cribs tend to be larger in size, there are several new designs don’t take up as much space.
Some manufacturers even produce cribs that are mini cribs. In all honestly, your baby will move from sleeping in a crib into a bed long before he ever outgrows his crib with respect to his physical size.
Even though a changing table is a very convenient to include in your decorating plans for your baby nursery,
it is not a requirement. Not having one just means that you’ll need to be sure to place a changing pad underneath
your baby to protect the crib bedding.
Other than having to bend over a little in order to change your baby there’s virtually no difference other than in
storage.
Creating storage baby items gives you the chance to express your creativity. Baskets offer great baby
nursery storage solutions.
They come in all different colors and styles, even ones that have tops or lids and close like chests. Pick hues and designs that you prefer and fill them with wipes, lotion, powder and other items you’ll need close at hand.
You can place them within arms reach underneath the crib itself. Large lined baskets are great for storing baby
clothes.
You can also create storage space in your baby nursery with hanging flowerpots and containers. Think beyond
the dull green plastic containers in garden shops.
You can paint them and decorate them with delightful decals. Wrap the metal wire hangers attached to the pots with ribbon.
You can even attach silk butterflies or other objects to compliment your hanging storage containers. Not only will
you save space, but you will also provide stimulation for your baby’s visual development.
When it comes to lighting, a small plug-in night light will generally produce any extra light you need.
Space-saving wooden rocking chairs produce the same effect as larger ones, which is the sweet cooing sound of a baby
as he is being gently rocked to sleep.
